I’ve always liked Fountains of Wayne’s cover of Britney Spears’ “Hit Me Baby One More Time.”

HALL PASS comes to mind. Terrific, edgy premise. Then, as soon as it introduces that premise, it immediately begins to backpedal and play it safe. This is a movie with no cajones.

Have you ever thought of changing your rating...
I have mixed feelings about the star rating system. You are 100% correct that it creates seeming inconsistencies. On the other hand, it’s the easiest to use. I didn’t go with the five star system because it never made sense to me. A five star movie would have to be a classic, but you can’t really assign classic status until the passage of time. Ten stars, meanwhile, seems overly...

What do you think of Ellen Barkin's film work from...
I’ve always thought she was a very talented actress. Sadly, she didn’t really get a lot of good parts after the 80s, but she definitely has talent. I believe I did see SIESTA back in the day, although I can’t recall what I thought of it.

Do you make a living off of reviewing films? What...
It’s very, very, very difficult to support yourself by being a film critic, unless you’re working for a major publication or website. No one should ever enter this profession expecting to be able to live off the salary. Some people have managed to do it, but the percentage is incredibly small. Most online critics have to work a second job to pay the bills, especially if, like me, they...

Which song do you never want to hear again?
My least favorite song of all time is “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” by Meat Loaf. It’s too long and really not my kind of song. More recently, I think it is time for Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” to go bye-bye.

Have there been times when you find being a film...
Not really. I’m doing something I love, and I’ve been lucky to develop a base of readers with whom I interact regularly via Twitter and Facebook. The opportunites that have been afforded to me have also gone beyond anything I could have imagined back when I first started. I’m blessed.

What recent films would you recommend?
It’s not in many theaters anymore, but WIN WIN is the best movie I’ve seen so far this year. SUPER 8 is really entertaining, as is X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. I think BRIDESMAIDS is very funny. There’s also a good documentary out there called JIG, about the World Irish Dancing Competition. It doesn’t sound that exciting on the surface, but it really pulls you in.

Do you think children under 12 should be allowed...
Depends on how mature they are. My dad used to take me to R-rated pictures at that age, and I handled it fine. Some kids are more impressionable than others, though, and may not be as able to deal with the adult content. I’m a big believer in parents being actively involved in what their children watch to determine what is or isn’t okay.

What's the difference between a 3 1/2 star and a 4...
That’s an excellent question, and I’m going to give you a completely honest answer: My star ratings are, to some degree, arbitrary and should only be used to get a quick, thumbnail idea of my impression of a film (2 = fair, 3 = good, 3.5 = something special, etc.). I’m kind of stingy with handing out 4-star ratings, simply because I want it to mean something when I do. Four stars...

What are some of the best movie monologues?
One of my favorites is the one Christopher Walken delivers in PULP FICTION, when he gives the watch to the little boy. I’m also partial to the one John Cusack gives in SAY ANYTHING (“I don’t want to buy, sell, or process anything for a living…”)

Do you think famous film critics saw the films...
Yes, I do. Critics get into this line of work because they love movies, so there’s no reason not to go. And while occasionally something comes along that you dread seeing, the reminder that you’re getting paid to sit through it is enough motivation to bite the bullet. Besides, if a critic hasn’t seen the movie, I think people would see through that easily. You can’t write...

Only sequels that are part of a series I strongly dislike. For example, I stopped seeing the SAW movies after the 4th one because I hated them all. Similarly, I skipped the third NARNIA movie because the first two bored me to tears.

It’s hard to pick just one, so I’ll cheat a little. My favorite traditional hand-drawn animated film is THE LION KING. My favorite computer generated animated film is UP. Or at least that’s how I feel today. There are so many quality animated films that my answers could change depending on how I feel tomorrow.

Crap Movie Alphabet
The other day, I made a Movie Alphabet, where I came up with a great movie (at least to me) for each of the 26 letters. In the interest of fairness, I now present my Crap Movie Alphabet, where I will list 26 really atrocious films, from A to Z.
A - Aeon Flux
B - Battlefield: Earth
C - Catwoman
D - Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo
E - Epic Movie
F - Freddy Got Fingered
G - Good Luck Chuck

Yesterday, a couple of my Twitter friends were posting their “Movie Alphabets.” The idea, I guess, is to list either your best or your favorite movie whose title begins with each of the 26 letters. I wasn’t sure if I could make such a list, but I started to mull it over in my mind. It turned out to be fun, so I completed my own Movie Alphabet. Is this list in any way definitive?...
